In early learning environments, leadership isn’t just about managing schedules or checking off boxes, it’s about shaping the culture of learning and care. That’s where pedagogical leadership comes in.
Pedagogical leadership focuses on the “why” behind our practice. It’s about guiding teams to reflect deeply, stay curious, and hold children’s rights and learning at the centre of everything we do. Rather than directing others, pedagogical leaders invite dialogue, encourage collaboration, and nurture professional growth. They create space for ECEs to think critically, challenge assumptions, and build shared understanding, not just for their own development, but in service of children’s experiences.
When we advocate for pedagogical leadership, we’re not only supporting ECEs, we’re advocating for children to have rich, meaningful, and consistent learning environments. Environments where play is respected, where diversity is welcomed, and where relationships drive everything.
This kind of leadership doesn’t always come with a title. You might be a director, a room lead, or an emerging ECE who’s asking thoughtful questions: that’s pedagogical leadership in action. What matters is the intentional focus on pedagogy: how we support children’s learning, how we design environments, and how we engage with families and each other.
In practice, pedagogical leadership might look like:
In Newfoundland and Labrador, as we strengthen early learning systems, we need to centre pedagogical leadership as part of that vision. It helps us hold on to what matters most: relationships, reflective practice, and the rights of every child to meaningful learning experiences.
So speak up. Ask for learning opportunities. Advocate for time to reflect and grow. Whether you’re just starting your journey or have years of experience, your voice and perspective matter. When ECEs are supported to learn, think, and lead, children benefit most of all.
We are committed to listening to the diverse voices of the current and future ELCC community. Your questions, concerns, and opinions are important to us. We appreciate you taking the time to reach out and collaborate with us.
