Beyond Babysitting: Shifting Public Perceptions of ECEs

March 4, 2025

Early childhood educators are often described in ways that miss the mark: “babysitters,” “daycare workers,” or “just playing with kids.” These descriptions not only undervalue the profession, they overlook the complex, intentional, and deeply relational work that ECEs do every day.

Changing this narrative starts with us.

When educators speak up about the depth of their work, how they support brain development, build emotional resilience, foster communication, and co-create learning environments, we begin to reshape public understanding. Self-advocacy is a powerful tool for change. Whether you’re explaining your role to families, posting on social media, or having conversations in your community, every moment of clarity chips away at outdated perceptions.

And the truth is: ECEs are highly skilled professionals. Your work is grounded in child development, play-based learning, inclusion, and responsive practice. You plan with intention, reflect with care, and build strong relationships that help children feel safe, seen, and ready to explore.

In Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada, early learning is being recognized more and more as essential workforce infrastructure, but real change also depends on the stories we tell and the language we use.

So the next time someone says, “Oh, you must have so much fun just playing all day!” don’t be afraid to say:

“Play is how children learn, and I create the environment that makes that learning possible.”

Public perception won’t shift overnight. But it will shift because of you. Your voice matters, your work matters, and the way you show up in your profession is a catalyst for meaningful change.
